Hoi An

Japanese Bridge Photo: Again the time to continue our love affair with all things buses came again, this time a nine hour yawn fest through unremarkable country to arrive in the remarkable Hoi An. The city of Hoi An is the cultural centre of Vietnam and it is one of the most picturesque places we have ever seen. It captures the vision at night with traditional lanterns adorning all power lines and lampposts, music plays gently from speakers on street corners and there is the glorious pop up Vietnamese street food carts every three metres. Its laneways and alleys are a return to simpler times. It is gorgeous. It is Frenchy. It is Hoi An.

River shot Hoi An photo: The decision was made to adventure north to the beaches on none other than Mr Moped. Being veterans of the motorised two wheel craft, we confidently negotiated one lane wide highways, dirt roads and freeways to discover An Bang beach. A secluded stretch of white sand that we shared with 100 of best friends, although laying under the palm trees was quite delightful. I had heard of waves 30min to the north near a city called Da Nang, so we left our little slice of paradise and hit the road again in search of Vietnamese perfection. What we found was an under developed wasteland with one foot slop and no boards in sight, but the adventure spirit was truly alive.

At night the lanterns light a path through the city, it creates a magical trail.

This is the Hai Van Pass, it was on Top Gear. You can call me Clarkson, actually don't, he's a jerk.
