This town was magical. A big old fort that lit up at night
on one hill and cobblestone streets that run as a labyrinth throughout the old
city. The place made you feel as if you were in Game of Thrones or at least a
very modern, non-decapitation form of the show. We had our first taste of
traditional Bulgarian food and my god were we impressed, more impressive was
the location as we ate in an old restaurant overlooking the river. Each table
was covered in doilies with lace hanging from each corner, and waiters in bow
ties and suit jackets bowed as they served you. The music was an interesting
choice as we partook in our delicious meals I was overcome with laughter as the
lyrics “…fuck you, you fucking whore,” crackled out of the stereo. The best bit
was everyone couldn’t understand it.
Cheap cider was consumed as we watched the
light show of the fort. It was the last place in Bulgaria that contained the
Turks when the Ottoman empire was run out of the country, but it really was a
beautiful place with its mountains and history and dirt cheap vodka.
