The people of Cambodia are some of the friendliest, generous
and helpful people we have ever met. No matter how poor or rich, they are
continually smiling and living each day to the fullest. A very bouncy six hours
will deliver you to Siem Reap, where the first words that can be heard are
“Sir, Lady, Tuk Tuk!!”
Siem Reap is famous for its temples and night life. The most
famous of which is Angkor Wat, a beautiful temple of architectural genius that
is the seventh wonder of the world. The complete Angkor Wat area is a UNESCO listed
heritage site and is brimming with incredible temples with exotic names like
‘The Terrace of the Elephant’ and ‘The Jungle Temple’, which was actually the
film location for ‘Lara Croft: Tomb Raider’. This caused a great deal of
excitement from Em, who decided to become Angelina Jolie and attempt to fly
kick her way through this ancient structure, only after she stopped trying to
beat her high score in real life Temple Run.
The temples were incredible, but some of the
hottest conditions we have ever beared witness to. My god, the amount of sweat
we had coming out of our bodies could have broken the drought in any rain
starved country. I made the mistake of wearing a white singlet and therefore
looked like I was entering a wet T-shirt competition. Once you have sweated out
every drop of fluid in your body and you are completely and utterly templed
out. There is only one thing to do. Head to Pub Street!! Yeah!!
Pub Street is the epicentre of food and drink in Siem Reap.
The street is closed off after 7pm which allows pedestrians to meander from bar
to bar without the fear of being crushed by an oncoming Tuk Tuk. Pub Street is
also the home to 50c beers which I must say is a glorious thing to partake in,
but the greatest thing about this paved paradise is the happy hours which can
range from three hours to all day, every day. The food is also delicious with
both of us deciding that at night Siem Reap is out favourite destination so
far.
