Flying from Bucharest to Athens, the excitement levels were
high! One reason, we were going to Greece and the other being Mum and Dad were
coming to visit and spend 10 days traversing this gloriously ancient country.
Surprising Mum and Dad at the airport, we quickly caught up and made our way to
the first of our insanely good accommodation that Mum had booked from home.
Finding ourselves five minutes’ walk from the Acropolis was heaven for Emma and
myself as we are used to staying 40 min out of town. To see Mum and Dad was
brilliant as it has been three months since I last laid eyes on them.
All the advice I had be given was to avoid Athens as it’s
boring, dirty and full of thieves. Never have I been given such shitty advice.
This was a city full of vibrancy, excitement and fun. A place where the economy
has disappeared but the people refuse to die with it. A city set upon the hills
of a grand ancient civilisation, but is purely modern in its approach to life.
A small town that lives within city, as the people are the most generous,
kindest, obliging, happiest folk one could ever hope to meet. Athens was
brilliant.
Wandering through the Acropolis and seeing the power this
small nation held over the world is something I am likely to ever forget. From
their ability to govern and create democracy, to their eternal struggle for
supremacy in the sporting world, the Greeks have done it all and always with a
smile and wink. The food is of another world. Gyros should be served in every
country and on every street as it is simply the greatest thing ever invented.
Take that sliced bread. I also managed to eat at least one, every day for
twelve days. High five!
